– January 30th, birth of Samuel Loyd in Philadelphia
USA .
1844 – Loyd's father a successful real estate operator moves family from Philadelphia to New York where Sam attends public school until the age of 17.
1855 – Loyd's first chess problem published in the New York Saturday Courier.
1857 – At sixteen he becomes problem editor of the Chess Monthly.
1870 – Loyd's interest in chess begins to wane and he turns his attention towards mathematical puzzles and novelty give-aways.
1871 – Loyd creates the ‘Trick Donkey's' puzzle, which he later sells to circus founder P. T. Barnum for $10,000. Millions are distributed.
1872 – Loyd creates ‘The Pony Puzzle' on his return trip from Europe with Andrew G. Curtain, then Minister to Russia . It was based on the White Horse Monument on Uffington Hill, Berkshire , England .
1896 – Loyd patents the ‘Get Off the Earth' Puzzle, that is later called the greatest mechanical puzzle ever invented. Over 20 million are distributed. He also becomes head of Brooklyn Daily Eagle's puzzle department.
1897 – Following on the success of ‘Get Off the Earth' Puzzle and inspired by Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado, Loyd creates ‘The Lost Man' puzzle for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. Once again millions are distributed.
1902 – As well as head of Brooklyn Daily Eagle's puzzle department, Loyd begins his monthly puzzle page in the Woman's Home Companion.
1907 – Loyd begins to consolidate his newspaper and magazine puzzles into a monthly publication titled ‘Our Puzzle Magazine' with his son Walther. Loyd is interviewed by George Grantham Bain for The Strand Magazine.
1909 –Loyd inspired by former United States President Theodore Roosevelt's safari to Africa , creates the last of his vanishing puzzles, and calls it, ‘Puzzle of Teddy and the Lion'.
1910 – Loyd's last issue of ‘Our Puzzle Magazine is published.
1911 – Loyd's last interview appears in The Delineator Magazine. Sam Loyd dies at his home in Brooklyn USA , April 10. Walther, Loyd's son, changes name to Sam Loyd and continues his fathers work.
1912 – Sam Loyd's Puzzles A Book for Children is published by David McKay. Philadelphia .
1914 – ‘Our Puzzle Magazine' is edited and consolidated into one large booked titled ‘ Sam Loyd's Cyclopedia of 5000 Puzzles, Tricks, and Conundrums with Answers' which has been called the most exciting puzzle, book to have ever been published.
1924 – Sam Loyd's Picture Puzzles is published by James Butler. ‘Get of the Earth Puzzle' puzzle is republished.
1927 – Sam Loyd's Tricks and Puzzles is published by Experimenter Publishing Company Inc.
1928 – Sam Loyd and his Puzzles, An autobiographical review is published by Barse & Co, N. J.
1934 – Sam Loyd dies at his home in Brooklyn on February 1934 and is buried near his father.
2005 – Work is started on republishing Sam Loyd's ‘Get Off the Earth' Puzzle. Samuelloyd.com domain name is registered. The first ever website dedicated to Sam Loyd's ‘Get Off the Earth' Puzzle goes live.
2006 - Sam Loyd's ‘Get Off the Earth' Puzzle is republished as a commemorative edition to celebrate 110 years since Sam Loyd received his patent. Puzzle sells out and collectors ask to have Loyd's other puzzles republished.
2007 – Sam Loyd's Trick Donkeys Puzzle and The Pony Puzzle are republished. The Sam Loyd Company is established to promote, educate, publish and protect Sam Loyd's work and legacy for everyone. Sam Loyd's website is updated to become Sam Loyd's Office and includes his biography and Cyclopedia. Visitors can also play the ‘Get Off the Earth' Puzzle on line. International Sam Loyd domain names are registered in Japan, China, Italy, Germany, Spain, India, Australia, New Zealand and the European Community to name a few so as to promote the website to an international market.
2008 - The Sam Loyd Company refreshes puzzles found in the Cyclopedia and introduces them in a new
format with color.
Puzzles from Sam Loyd's Puzzles A Book for Children first published in 1912 are re-introduced on the website.
The Sam Loyd Company publishes Sam Loyd's Classic Puzzles, Get Off the Earth, The Lost Man, Puzzle of Teddy and the Lion and Famous Trick Donkeys in their orignal formats just the way Sam Loyd first had them published.
2009 - Puzzle of Teddy and the Lion celebrates 100 years since Sam Loyd created it back in 1909.
