A Battle Royal By Sam Loyd is one of his most intriguing puzzles. It is made up of a broken chess board that needs to be reassembled. The MMACA Association recently constructed a workable model which they displayed at their exhibition. Following is information about this exhibition and how the puzzle was solved.
Sam Loyd's Broken Chessboard is presented with two other historical puzzles (Cubosoma and the 9 pieces cubic puzzle) in a module dedicated to historical maths puzzles. We (MMACA Association) prepared it for Figures Exhibit "Experiences Matemàtiques" on May, 7th-14th. Figures is 2009 Catalonia Cultural Capital. We will present the exposition in Girona, on June, 12th-19th for schools and on July, 1st-4th for Spanish Maths Teachers on the occasion of XIV JAEM (biannual Spanish Maths Teachers Conference). The exposition is destined to itinerancy, starting from Centelles, on October 2009. MMACA Association is formed by representatives of Catalonia Maths Teachers Societies, Catalonia Maths Society of Catalonia Studies Institute, and Universities. It is supported by Catalonia Generalitat's Departments of Education and of Culture, Catalonia Maths Society and Educational Science Institute of Polytechnic University of Catalonia and CREAMAT (Catalonia Generalitat's Departments of Education (CREAMAT project) and of Culture, Catalonia Maths Society and Educational Science Institute of Polytechnic University of Catalonia).
